Intimate partner violence is a serious, preventable public health problem in the United States that has lasting and harmful effects on individuals, families, and communities. Intimate Partner Violence is physical violence, sexual violence, stalking, or psychological harm by a current or former partner or spouse. This type of violence can occur among heterosexual or same-sex couples and does not require sexual intimacy.
Teen dating violence also called, “dating violence”, is an adverse childhood experience that affects millions of young people in the United States and the World. It is a type of intimate partner violence that can include the following types of behavior:
Occurs when a person hurts or tries to hurt a partner by hitting, kicking, or using another type of physical force.
When forcing or attempting to force a partner to take part in a sex act and or sexual touching when the partner does not or cannot consent. It also includes non-physical sexual behaviors like posting or sharing sexual pictures of a partner without their consent or sexting someone without their consent.

Domestic violence affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men in the U.S. It’s not just physical—it’s emotional, financial, and psychological. Every minute, nearly 20 people experience abuse by an intimate partner. You are not alone, and there is a way out.
Ways to Empower Yourself or Someone You Know:
✔ Build a Strong Support System – Family, friends, and trusted individuals can provide emotional and physical support when it’s needed most.
✔ Gain Financial Independence – Financial control is a common abuse tactic. Establishing personal savings, learning about credit, and securing financial freedom can be life-changing.
✔ Use Your Voice – Transparency and speaking up can be powerful tools. Whether it’s seeking legal help, finding resources, or confiding in someone you trust—your voice matters.
There is Help, and You Can Stay Anonymous. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233 or text START to 88788.
